Okay, humor me a bit here: If Pappy was, as he claimed, 99 years old in the early 1930's, then that means that he was born somewhere around 1833 or so. Which means that he was alive and in his prime during the days of the Civil War and Wild West. So what do you think that his life was like back then? Was he always a sailor, or was he a no-good outlaw. Or maybe even an esteemed lawman? Would he have been involved in the war as a soldier, or, more likely, a profiteer? Is it a coincidence that Pappy abandoned his infink son around the same time that the legendary Gunfight at the OK Corral occured? Was he involved in some way? Yeah, I realize full well that none of this was likely in EC's head when he was writing the character, but as a devotee of both Popeye and the Old West, I kinda thought it was interesting. Doc

Interesting thoughts, Doc!! I seem to remember that the KFS made-for-TV cartoons featured Pappy in wild west settings a couple of times, but those cartoons were supposedly set in the "present." In cartoon universes, the West always stayed "old" and "wild," even in the "present."
I could easily imagine Pappy fighting in the Civil War. Although I can also equally imagine him as a deserter, because he just wouldn't want to get involved. Prospecting for gold and brawling in western saloons would be right up his alley, though.
