Was watching SHAPE AHOY on YouTube and I noticed some interesting points, and more proof that the Popeye mini-movies that Famous Studios turned out were NOT originally meant for kids.
a -- The fellas' untidy appearance and surroundings represent the "slovenly bachelor" stereotype.
b -- Popeye's acting like a dog when Olive kisses him is a play on the term "puppy love"
c -- Popeye feeding Olive the fruit is a role-reversal sendup of the depiction of Roman emperors being hand-fed fresh fruit by their female consorts.
d -- Bluto brings Olive a bunch of coconuts, but Popeye brings her a fruit ASSORTMENT. A representation of one-upmanship.
e -- When Olive complains of wanting food, that's not all she wants. She wants to feel CARED FOR.
