Ah, Popeye rocks; I wish I would have known about this forum earlier. Anyway, I wanted to ask, do you believe Bluto and Popeye were better off as friends, or as foes? Several of the theatrical shorts started off with the two being good buddies, and a few ended with them still being good buddies, even though they fought during the plot. I’ve liked those shorts a lot; I know Bluto was always meant to be the “bad guy”, but I liked seeing him in those other roles.
At any rate, I apologize for being vague. I’m no expert on Popeye, so I’m just going by what I’ve seen.

Nah, I always like seeing those two as friends. I mean, as much as I adore Shorty and Wimpy, Bluto makes a better buddy for Popeye than they do in my opinion. I'd say it's too bad that there aren't two Olive Oyls, but...I don't think I could stand a world with one, not to mention two. Lol. That woman drives me batty. ;D

Welcome, Huntsman:
My take was that Popeye and Bluto were old friends, but that they were both very macho and competitive with each other. Bluto had a bit of a temper problem, though this was perfectly understandible considering Popeye's unfair advantage. In a cartoon world where a person can get punched right through a mountain and then be good as new thirty seconds later, over-the-top bouts of fisticuffs between friends would not be unrealistic.
Let's face it, if not for the sheer reason of each trying to outdo the other, what reason would either of them have had to invest THAT much time in chasing a woman who was obviously never going to choose one over the other. You'd think that after twenty or thirty years at least one of them would just have given it up and gone to see if Betty Boop was free.

I prefer Popeye and Bluto to be "emenies." That's the way they started out in the original Segar comic strip, and the cartoons I enjoy the most are when they try to outdo, outfight, or even kill one another. Bluto was going to murder Popeye in Segar's story and Popeye only was able to stop their vicious fight when he used his special punch which could take a man's life. Popeye needs serious threats! And Bluto as an off-again, on-again "battling buddy" just doesn't do it for me.
