I had a Popeye punching bag, a couple of Popeye coloring books and at least one Little Golden Book, and a Popeye Colorforms set based on the Famous Studios character designs. My neigbor had the Popeye and Brutus Soaky Toys and a Popeye record.

Most of my childhood toys were of the Star Wars flavor, but I did have some cool Popeye stuff. I had an entire series of the Popeye bendies that they released about once a month where I grew up in Melbourne. They were very detailed and all in proportion to each other, with Bluto being very large and Eugene and Swee'Pea being small. I think there were a dozen altogether, with some of them unfamiliar to me at the time (Castor, Geezil) until I grew older and read the collections of classic strips.
Other toys included a stuffed Eugene, a Popeye figure with cloth clothing, a pipe that made the "toot toot" sound when blown, and more Popeye comic books than you could shake a jeep at.

In the old days they used to have Popeye candy cigarettes.I know,I know but I got them every chance I could for the cool art work on the boxes. And no, I didn't end up smoking. Not that I condone bad habits as candy. That was a different time then.Another world.

I remember disctinctly having some sort of Olive Oyl t-shirt as a wee'un but I forget what it looked like. I know my brother and I had stuff here and there, but again I just can't recall what. A few years ago however I rescued a very battered and sad-looking tin Popeye lunhbox from my dad's garage. But I think that's it. That's why I collect stuff *now*. We're moving soon and I'd very much like to do a Popeye theme in my new bathroom. I already have a Popeye bathmat...I also have a KFS comic-strip-printed shower curtain but my batheroom will have a shower with doors. My brother will have the tub, so if he wants the curtain he can have it.

I remember those cigarettes! And, believe it or not, about ten years ago I saw them again in a convenience store. Talk about being politically incorrect!

They still have the candy cigarettes, but now they have superhero art on them. I guess that Popeye just isn't cool anymore. But he could still kick Wolverine's sorry butt up and down the town. GW

Wow, Zimin902W, you're absolutely right! I guess I just never looked at it that way before.
Thanks!
