Hello Sparky
From what I can tell, this is an effort to collect all nine years of Segar's Popeye strips from Thimble Theatre in six hardcover volumes. The book does look nice, but I already picked up Segar's entire run when they were relased by Fantagraphic Press back in the late 80's-early 90's. Sooo, I passed on the new hardcover. Please let us know if there is anything special in there other than the collected strips.

I wanted (and still want) the Fantagraphic books but was in college when they came out and could not afford them. And now I have trouble finding them when I actually have some scratch. So I was hoping these new books would do. I haven't gotten far in the book but I'll let y'all know what I think of it. I see there is some sort of new Dick Tracy collection out now too, but as I already own at least half a dozen DT colletions I'll probably pass on that one. That's the only other classic strip I collect. (If I had the time I'd start a website for that one too - I daresay I've read far more DT than I've read Popeye, actually.)

Thingy Tracy (snigger). The politically correct spell check on this board is way out of hand. But yes, I'm also a follower of Di... um, Detective Tracy. I have read all of his major adventures when they were packaged for the movie back in 1988, but have never gotten a chance to read the whole series in order with no gaps between the stories. Gotta say, the old strips were still the best. Di ck Tracy, Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant, and that Popeye guy. Doc

I got a copy for Christmas. It's great!! You can't beat the original Popeye!

The originals were the best. Once Popeye ended up in the hands of folks other than Segar, the series as a whole just seemed watered down to me. I still laugh when I recall Olive beating the tar out of the outlaw Clint Gore, all the while shouting frantically for help that she obviously didn't need. Doc
